Stop Sleepwalking with Hypnosis
Sleepwalking (somnambulism) can be quite dangerous, as it causes people to walk around or perform other activities without conscious control. This causes many people who sleepwalk to get hurt accidentally. However, hypnosis can be used as a treatment method for sleepwalking, as the mental state of a sleepwalker and a person who is under the effects of hypnosis are incredibly similar. During hypnotherapy, the rapid eye movement state is tapped into while the patient is still conscious, and suggestions are given to cease sleepwalking.
Sleepwalking and REM
Sleepwalking occurs during the rapid eye movement (REM) part of sleep. This is the part of sleep most closely associated with dreaming. Usually the brain releases a chemical that paralyzes the body during sleep, but those who sleepwalk do not have this chemical trigger, which is what enables them to walk during sleep. Although it’s a myth that sleep walkers shouldn’t be awakened it can be hard to rouse the sleepwalker during an episode and afterwards the sleepwalker may have no recollection of what happened.
Dangers of sleep walking
People have been known to boil kettles or even attempt to drive cars while sleepwalking. It is not surprising for sleepwalkers to seek medical assistance and advice. These are obviously risky actions that can have serious consequences should a sleepwalker fall into some bad luck.
Reasons for sleepwalking
Children tend to grow out of sleepwalking–the cause may be anxiety or not having had enough sleep. Sleepwalking doesn’t necessarily indicate psychological problems.
Adult sleepwalking may be related to alcohol abuse, brain seizures, or as a reaction to certain drugs or medications. It’s important to get medical advice if you or someone you know sleep walks.
Hypnosis and sleep walking
The relationship between sleep and hypnosis shows how strongly they are actually tied together. Hypnosis is a way of accessing the REM state when you are still awake. You are more suggestible during REM, which is why hypnosis is used to cure all kinds of conditions. Because sleepwalking occurs in the REM state, suggestions given in controlled REM, otherwise known as ‘hypnosis,’ can help control or eliminate sleepwalking behavior.
